1) HOW HAS PLANTYOU MADE PLANT BASED LIVING EASY?
Plant You aims to make plant-based eating easy, by serving up simple recipes, tips and advice on how to easily transition. With thousands of readers every month, as well as a support group on Facebook, Plant You offers an engaged community of plant-based eaters to answer related questions and share inspiration on how this lifestyle is not only achievable but easy!
2) CAN YOU GET FULL EATING ONLY PLANTS?
You can absolutely get full only eating plants. A common misconception of the plant-based diet is that you can only eat fruits and vegetables! That’s not true at all. Whole grains, brown rice, potatoes, beans, legumes and nuts are all PLANTS and are all considered part of a healthful plant-based lifestyle. By consuming lots of vegetables, whole grains and legumes, not only will you have delicious and endless meal options, you will also be full and satisfied.
3) DOES EATING PLANT-BASED HELP PEOPLE LOSE WEIGHT?
Any diet that you STICK TO will help you lose weight, and the plant-based diet is no exception (although you’ll be making a much better choice for your overall health)! Losing weight and achieving a healthy body-type is the product of consistent healthy choices. On the basis that eating plant-based means cutting down or eliminating meats, dairy, added refined sugars and oil, many people do lose weight without trying. On average meals with meat are also higher in calories, so without knowing it you might be consuming less on a plant-based diet. Finally, studies show that on average, vegans and vegetarians have lower Body Mass Index’s than non-vegetarians.
4) 3 PLANT-BASED FOODS THAT CAN BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY?
GARLIC – Garlic contains the immune stimulating compound allicin, which promotes the activity of white blood cells to destroy flu and cold viruses
ONIONS – Onions, like garlic, contain allicin. They are also pungent, which makes you sweat, and increases blood circulation which is helpful to prevent infections
GINGER – Ginger is spicy and pungent, helps to soothe sore throats, and encourages coughing to help loosen mucus. Ginger also contains anti-inflammatory chemicals including gingerol.
5) HOW CAN ONE GET ENOUGH CALCIUM FROM A PLANT BASED DIET?
For proper calcium absorption, you need to consume food sources that contain types of calcium that are easily digested and absorbed. Because of the calcium-magnesium ratio in dairy products, our bodies do not properly absorb the calcium it contains. We should aim for between 1,000-1,200 MG of calcium a day, which can be achieved through the consumption of plant-based foods or with a daily vitamin. Some excellent sources of calcium from plant-based foods include: Kale (1 cup contains 180 mg), Collard Greens, Blackstrap Molasses, Tempeh, Fortified Almond Milk, Tahini etc.
6) WILL I GET ENOUGH PROTEIN FROM A PLANT BASED DIET AND HOW?
Our society is currently obsessed with protein, and we don’t need nearly as much as we think! For reference, a 154-pound person (70 kg) needs between 56 and 70 grams of protein a day. Luckily for us, protein is in EVERY SINGLE PLANT-FOOD! Some great sources of plant-based protein include soy products (tofu, soybeans etc.), legumes (black beans, kidney beans, chickpeas), nuts, and dark leafy greens like spinach.
7) WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE OUT TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ADOPT A PLANT BASED DIET?
Achieving a plant-based lifestyle does not have to be something that happens overnight. At Plant You, we pride ourselves on approaching plant-based eating with an “all inclusive” and non-intimidating attitude. Whether it starts by participating in Meatless Monday’s, or adopting a “week-day vegan” lifestyle, you are making an amazing positive step towards a healthier you! Over time, these consistent changes are what will drive you to adopt a maintainable plant-based lifestyle for life.
